La Thuile, Italy
La Thuile is a little known Italian resort with extensive slopes and a lift and piste link with La Rosiere in France. The resort itself is split into two - the modern Planibel complex at the foot of the gondola and the old village across the river. Both parts have their own restaurants, bars and shops. Where you stay will ultimately depend on what you like. Do ask us for advice.
The 150km of piste provide a great network suitable for all standards of skier, furthermore La Thuile has an excellent snow record as most of the skiing is above 1,800 metres in altitude. Beginners and intermediates will love the wide pistes and for the more advanced there is the chance to try heli skiing.
Pros & Cons
- Good size ski area - linked with La Rosiere in France
- Uncrowded and no queues to speak of
- Modern lift system by Italian standards
- Great off-piste terrain and heli-skiing opportunities
- Not the place to go if you are looking for apres ski or nightlife
- Not suited to beginners as there are very few easy pistes
There are actually quite a few good restaurants in La Thuile offering everything from pasta and pizza to more sophisticated traditional specialities, fondues and raclettes. The Bricole and La Lune are good for pasta as well as meat dishes. La Rascard is a little more pricy and offers a higher end cuisine. Other recommendations are Lo Creton, La Grotta, La Fordze and La Raclette. If you are after a good capuccino then you must try the Chocolat!
Maison Carrel on run 6 is the newest restaurant on the slopes where you will find good value for money pasta and other Italian specialities. Other restaurants include the Clotze at the foot of the Chalets chairlift, the Offshore, Meleze, Neige and the Riondet.
There are a few bars at the bottom of the gondola as well as one or two places in the old town. The apres ski scene is, however, fairly limited compared to some of the larger French resorts.
There is not too much to offer. However, the Bricolette bar, the videodiscopub Bricole and the Fantasia disco are the only places to shake your stuff!
