Obergurgl, Austria
Obergurgl is situated in the spectacular Oetz Valley and is Austria's highest parish, resulting in excellent snow records and a very long skiing season. The resort remains largely unspoilt and has no through traffic, and with a wide selection of very good hotels it is ideal for luxury ski holidays. The skiing starts directly from the village, with ski in / out locations for some of the luxury hotels.
Obergurgl is a small village so getting about is really very easy and arranging a lunchtime rendezvous of skiers and non-skiers is a pretty simple exercise, making it a popular choice for families. The après ski is varied and is mostly focused around the hotel bars; the resort enjoys a friendly atmosphere that draws guests back year after year.
The large beginners' area is a great place to learn and quickly builds confidence. It also has the advantage of being very accessible taking out a lot of hassle for those just starting out. The luxury hotels in Obergurgl are very good and the resort is a good spot for families with beginners. The neighbouring resort of Hochgurgl also has some hotel accommodation but is a smaller resort than Obergurgl and less suited to luxury ski holidays.
