Val Thorens, France
Val Thorens is the highest in the Alps. With many north facing slopes it guarantees good snow right from the end of November through to May - the longest ski season of any European ski resort. With access to the expansive Three Valleys ski area, Val Thorens offers a range of slopes for all abilities and the fastest lift system in France.
It is a classic purpose built resort so is not desperately attractive but this does mean that there is a good selection of ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens. Or particular note are the 5 star Alta Pura and Koh-I Nor hotels. Val Thorens can cater to anyone seeking a luxury ski holiday with easy access to and from the slopes.
Right in the centre of the resort in the Place de Caron there are gentle nursery slopes. As plenty of the bars, restaurants and hotel terraces overlook this area there are good beginner viewing opportunities especially in the warmer months of March and April when alfresco eating, even at 2,300 metres altitude, is pleasant.
There is also easy access to the rest of the vast Three Valleys ski domain making this a great resort for beginners and aspiring intermediate skiers looking to chew up the miles. The resort has extensive covered shopping arcades with a good choice of bars and restaurants and there is also a great sports centre.
